Kitchen drains fail differently from bathroom drains. Bathroom lines clog with hair. Kitchen lines clog with grease, which cools on the way down, coats the inside of the pipe and narrows it a little more every month until the day it closes.

Worth knowing before you call
A disposal that hums is usually jammed rather than dead. There is a hex socket on the underside of most units and a wrench that comes with them, and turning the plate free by hand fixes it more often than not. Try that before you buy a new one. If the unit is silent instead of humming, check the reset button on the bottom before you assume anything.
Grease is the thing to change. Pouring cooking fat down a kitchen drain is what eventually costs you a jetting bill, and running hot water after it does not help, because the grease just cools further along the line where it is harder to reach. Wipe pans out into the bin and the drain calls mostly stop.
Batch it. The trip charge is the expensive part of a small plumbing job, and it is the same whether the plumber fixes one thing or five. Before you call, walk the house and write down everything: the toilet that runs, the shower that will not hold temperature, the faucet you have been meaning to replace since last year. Hand over the whole list at once. It is the single easiest way to spend less.
